Glamazons return! (It's beginning to look a lot like the '90s!)

Linda

The New York Post's user guide to fall fashion magazines misses one important trend: the welcome return of the supermodel. Vanity Fair's Style Issue chats with the ladies, who like it or not, made many of us the fashion junkies we are:

"It was lightning in a bottle," says Paul Wilmot, who was head of public relations at Calvin Klein in the late 1980's, when the supermodel phenomenon took flight. "Suddenly you had five or six incredibly glamorous and beautiful girls, and they all looked different. And they all were known by their first names. And they all palled around. That has never happened before. It was almost the female equivalent of Sinatra's Rat Pack."

VF is hoarding the full text, but you can see the photos here or flip through their virtual scrapbook of past Super Spreads.

Look no further than September's Vogue to find the Supers in a succession of ads: YSL, Prada and Chanel, starring Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Claudia Schiffer. Turn another page for Kate Moss cocooned in Donna Karan's claret wool bouclé, then Stella Tennant posed in gold lamé Marc Jacobs and then, a few pages later, Tennant again, this time jeweled and glossy for Vera Wang.

On the way from Kate to Stella, don't miss a visit from "'90s icon Alex Lindquist for Brooks Brothers (in other photos from this spread, not in Vogue, he shares the bench with "80s Bruce Weber muse and model Jeff Aquilon). At 300 or so pages in there's also a double page spread of Christie Turlington in Escada, and then Schiffer again, paired with the sensational ballet dancer Robert Bollé for Salvatore Ferragamo...

The glamazons return -- and we haven't even hit the editorial yet. In the meantime, enjoy this clip shot by fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh, which captures the creative zeitgeist of the girls' silent screen aura:

Shopping: The Scent of Man

Chanel
Photo: Getty Images

Feel like smelling good? (The right answer is "yes," whether or not you like to wear fragrances.) In any event, check out Perfumes The Guide by Luca Turin, a leading scholar in the field of olfactory science and his co-author and perfume collector Tina Sanchez. Don't feel like reading the whole book? Fine. Here's a short list of the best masculine scents on the market:

Chanel - Pour Monsieur (chypre)
"Reference masculine - embodies to perfection the accord of fresh bergamot, sweet labdanum, and austere oakmoss that defines the genre - a warm, relaxed, confident voice, quietly melodious and in which you can hear a smile."

Guerlain - Eau de Guerlain (citrus verbena)
"Has a coherent, fresh drydown that completely transcends the cologne genre. If you want citrus, there is simply nothing better out there."

L'Artisan Parfumeur - Timbuktu (woody smoky)
"An affecting start of vetiver, sandalwood, and incense that seems quiet until you realize that, like modern sound systems that can pipe music into every room, one sprtiz fills a house with an odd, distinctly perceptible, but almost infared shimmer of woody freshness."

Chatter: Gabrielle Coco Chanel on Personal Responsibility

Varvatos to Show in Milan; Models Star in Fall Ads; Richie Rich for Hot Topic; Chanel Gets Fly; The Coppolas do Vuitton

80980944 John Varvatos will show his Spring 2009 Collection in Milan. He's probably just tired of everyone bitching about taking over the CBGB's space and turning it into a museum of the East Village's gentrification.  [FWD]

Here's a shocker: Designers are trading in celebrity faces and choosing *actual* models for their ad campaigns this fall. Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Prada, Versace, YSL, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Escada will all feature catwalking waifs in their ads. Perhaps people are tired of celebrities? or maybe they just got too expensive? or maybe it they are fed up that celebrities can't fit in sample sizes. After all, when John Travolta is the face of your watch brand, you know you're scraping the bottom of the barrel. [FWD]

Richie Rich will launch a line for Hot Topic called Celebutante.  But his BFF and Heatherette partner in crime Traver is not part of the project. "He didn't want to do it," says Richie. Is this another sign of the Heatherette apocalypse? [Fashionista]

A Chanel Fly Fishing Rod? Could this be the ultimate meeting of classy and trashy? What's next? A Chanel Airstream? [The Cut]

Francis Ford Coppola and daughter Sofia star in Louis Vuitton's latest ad campaign. Wait, what happened to no celebrities? [The Cut]

More Miley Cyrus (because you love it); SJP Doing McQueen?; The Met's Costume Institue benefit; Ben Pamies (yum)

80813618 Photo: Getty Images

Still haven't heard enough about Miley Cyrus' scandalous (read: fabulous) Vanity Fair cover?  Neither have we, because now the upper echelon of the magazine world are weighing in.  Everyone from ELLE's Roberta Myers to GQ's Jim Nelson to former editor of VF Tina Brown (!) are giving their two cents. [The Cut]

The Sex and the City movie hits theaters in a mere 25 days, so why did SJP spend all day Saturday with Alexander McQueen for a fitting?  Is she prepping for her big premiere?  Or maybe she's being outfitted for tonight's Met gala?  In any case, we're dying to see her in one of his Victorian goth creations that came down the runway in February.  [Fashionista]

Speaking of tonight's Costume Institute Ball at NYC's Metropoliltan Museum of Art, our favorite designers are dragging along their favorite celebrity muses to tonight's event, each one dressed to the nines like the label whoring mannequins that we've come to expect.  Among others, Chanel will have Kate Bosworth, Thandie Newton and Audrey Tautou in tow, and Peter Som is attending with Maggie Gyllenhaal. We, on the other hand, will have Ben and Jerry. [WWD]

Let's be honest, male models are the real driving force of the fashion world.  Ben Pamies is leading the way... [Queerty]

Justin is Madonna's Bitch; Yoko Devereaux's Latest Dish; Naomi does YSL; Chanel's Spaceship Lands in Hong Kong; H&M Opens New London Store; Kate Behind the Wheel

80195530 Photo: Getty Images

Madonna mined the Dolce & Gabbana archives to resurrect a 20+ year old corset and a fur-trimmed coat from the Italian designers' 1995 menswear collection. Meanwhile, on the ridiculous "electric youth"-style cover for her song with Justin Timberlake, 4 Minutes, her Madgesty wore head-to-toe Roberto Cavalli. Justin, however, was not so lucky with wardrobe. Let's just say that Madonna knows to make it clear who is the bitch in charge and who is just the bitch. [WWD]

Yoko Devereaux's creative director Andy Salzer dishes about living in his own Williamsburg shop, the similarities between Gucci and a zombie film, and how inspiration can be a slap in the face. [Supermarket]

Phone-hurling supermodel Naomi Campbell (who also made a cameo on Bravo's Make Me a Supermodel last week) has been tapped by Stefano Pilati as the face of YSL's fall ad campaign. Let's hope everone wore hard hats to the photo shoot. [WWD]

Chanel's mobile spaceship art exhibit designed by starchitect Zaha Hadid begins its world tour and lands in Hong Kong featuring art inspired by the brand's original quilted handbag. [IHT]

Because H&M didn't have quite as many stores as Starbucks in Europe, H&M shifts its strategy and plans to open a store in London dedicated solely to its youth-focused streetwear label Divided. [WWD]

The next time you find yourself hailing a cab in London, it just might be model Kate Moss behind the wheel. The supermodel has reportedly purchased an iconic black cab and enjoys motoring around town and carting her friends from party to party. And you thought NYC cab drivers were crazy. [Daily Mail UK]

Simon Doonan Gropes Donatella and Gets a TV Show; The Girdle for Men; M.I.A. Does Marc by Marc Jacobs; Bottoms for Obama; Karl Lagerfeld Owns More Than One Suit

80299876 Photo: Getty Images

Simon Doonan (pictured, feeling up Donatella Versace), quite possibly the most fabulous window dresser ever, except for Hollywood in the Mannequin films, will see his own life portrayed on the small screen. His memoir, Nasty: My Family and Other Glamorous Varmints, will be turned into a comedy series for BBC2 in the UK by the producer behind Ab Fab, Little Britain and The Office. And don't forget to pick up Doonan's new book Eccentric Glamour, which hits stores April 8th. [WWD]

Need to lose some extra pounds immediately? Pour yourself into slimming underwear. The girdle for men has hit Saks Fifth Avenue! Drag queens rejoice! Now say it with me, boys: "Breathe up, not out." [Guardian UK]

M.I.A.'s Marc by Marc Jacobs ad campaign is pretty damn amazing. If you don't believe me, just click here. [FabSugar]

Sex and politics always go hand in hand—after all, everyone gets fucked by the government at some point. So, show your political position, whether you prefer to take your politics standing up, sitting or laying down with your legs in the air. Embrace the starfish as a new political party! Bottoms for Obama! [The New Gay]

Karl Lagerfeld changed his clothes. Seriously. Casting aside his black suit and skinny tie, he was snapped sporting a gray three-piece suit and bowtie. He didn't, however, lose his super-high collar. What else would hold up his head? [FabSugar UK via Jezebel]

Project Runway Sews HIV into Drama; Lily Allen on Karl Lagerfeld; Radar's Lagerfeld Documentary Review

Project Runway's first dramatic scene debuted today in the gossip pages! Rumor has it that the oh-so-handsome HIV-positive contestant, Jack Mackenroth, was booted off the show after a getting a staph infection. The Daily News reports, "According to a source who spoke with him, "He is saying he got kicked off not because he lost a challenge, but because he got a 'staph' infection and said his face blew up like the kid from 'Mask.'" But Mackenroth denies spreading the goss because he is sworn to secrecy. This is going to be the best season yet. [Daily News]

Lily Allen on meeting Karl Lagerfeld, " I was absolutely petrified when I first met Karl [Lagerfeld]. All the PRs were pushing me into going and I was like, what am I doing? And I was really s******g myself. And when I did meet him he was like, ‘Hello, nice to meet you’." [Times UK]

Radar weighs in on the Karl Lagerfeld documentary and highlights the man's best quotes: "Fashion is ephemeral, dangerous, and unfair.... If you want social justice, become a civil servant.... Fashion people enchant me." And don't forget the sign in Lagerfeld's bathroom that reads "Pissing everywhere isn't very Chanel." [Radar]

Art on Tour; Smells Like Madonna; Zegna Pulls Out of Pitti Uomo

The Magical Mystery Tour...for art! Hermés and Chanel are hitting the road with mobile art exhibits. While Hermes' collection, called H Box, will travel in a movable metal, space-pod-looking structure designed by architect-artist Didier Fiuza Faustino, and Chanel's exhibit will float from location to location in a futuristic structure designed by Zaha Hadid. Stationary art galleries are so five years ago. [WWD]

Smell like her Madgesty! Madonna to debut her own fragrance...maybe. What does an aging pop star smell like? [Fashionista]

After 30 years, Zegna pulled out from Milan's Pitti Immagine Uomo fashion show. The company will present its Fall/Winter 2008-2009 collection at its new Milan headquarters and showroom while the Z Zegna line will continue presentations at New York Fashion Week. [Fashion Week Daily]

Model Living; Chanel's Lost Legend; Jai Rodriguez Gets a Little Nip & Tuck; Eco-friendly Dance Club; Hollywould Do Men

743554371

Queer Eye's Jai Rodriguez. Photo: Getty Images

Have you ever wanted to live in one of those far-too-perfect apartments shown in interior design magazines? Now you can! A handful of magazines have designed various apartments in New York City to reflect the style of the publication and will sell for $1.6 million. I wonder what an Out apartment would look like.  It sure wouldn't have that country kitsch look of Country Living. [WWD]

Chanel's design director, Jacques Helleu, passed away on friday at the age of 69. [British Vogue]

Jai Rodriguez (the guy from Queer Eye whose role I still don't understand. What the hell does he do?) will appear on E!'s Dr. 90210 tonight to get some work done on his lips. I'm not kidding. Hopefully, he won't end up looking like Amanda Lepore. [E!]

An eco-friendly dance club to open in NYC? Expect recycled tables, and energy-saving lights. Please don't let them be compact fluorescent bulbs—nobody looks good under fluorescent lighting. [WWD]

Hollywould wants to do men. The women's shoe brand plans to unleash a mens line on the world. Ballet flats for men? Oh no, she Hollyshouldn't. [NY Mag]

Lagerfeld in the Big Smoke; Stella Hearts Kangaroos; Prada Parties with The Hours; Cavalli Delivers Celebrities

Karl Lagerfeld announces plans to show Chanel's pre-fall collection in the Big Smoke this December—that's London, folks. Bring an umbrella and a warm coat. [WWD]

Animal rights champion and vegetarian designer Stella McCartney denies rumors that her "Stella McCartney for Adidas" line uses kangaroo leather to make shoes. The adorable marsupials are safe from smelling like sweaty feet. [Fashion Week Daily]

Prada will celebrate New York Fashion Week in usual fashion: With a big party in its flagship store on Sept. 7th with The Hours and LCD Soundsystem providing music. And Damien Hirst, who lent his design talents to Levi's Warhol Factory X line of denim, has provided a few interior design touches, as well. Think skull patterned wallpaper and a large skull shaped mirror. Nothing says "Welcome" like skeletons. [WWD]

Roberto Cavalli is celebrating the opening of his Just Cavalli boutique in Manhattan during fashion week with a party (also on Sept 7th). Diane Kruger, Joshua Jackson and Mena Suvari are expected to attend while The Queens of Noize provide a worthy soundtrack. So, stop your worrying that celebrities won't be attending Fashion Week. Neiman Marcus hits 100; Ou falls into the GAP; Chanel Art; Coke Recycles Eco-Fashion

Jaymccarroll Photo: Getty Images

Neiman Marcus is older than dirt—okay, 100 years young—and Prada designed a special collection to honor the milestone. Now, the true label-obsessed can get clothes and accessories with TWO brand names. [WWD]

Daniel Ou, the former style editor of the now-defunct Cargo magazine (may it rest in peace), was named director of concept development for menswear at Gap Inc. Hopefully, he'll have better luck at GAP. [Fashion Week Daily]

Chanel's Rodeo Drive flagship will look like a giant Chanel No. 5 perfume box. I love it. Oh yeah, Alec Soth and Y.Z. Kami will display their art in the store, too. [WWD]

Jay McCarroll (pictured, with Kelis) isn't happy about New York Magazine labelling him homeless, so he took his protest to the street...and pretended to be...well, homeless. [Radar]

Coke to recycle used bottles into T-shirts. Seriously. Revolve and Coca Cola are teaming up to create an eco-friendly line of clothes made of reused polyethylene terephthalate. The line launches later this month and will be called Re:volve for Coca Cola. It doesn't sound very comfortable to me. [WWD]
