Feel like smelling good? (The right answer is "yes," whether or not you like to wear fragrances.) In any event, check out Perfumes The Guide by Luca Turin, a leading scholar in the field of olfactory science and his co-author and perfume collector Tina Sanchez. Don't feel like reading the whole book? Fine. Here's a short list of the best masculine scents on the market:
Chanel - Pour Monsieur (chypre) "Reference masculine - embodies to perfection the accord of fresh bergamot, sweet labdanum, and austere oakmoss that defines the genre - a warm, relaxed, confident voice, quietly melodious and in which you can hear a smile."
Guerlain - Eau de Guerlain (citrus verbena) "Has a coherent, fresh drydown that completely transcends the cologne genre. If you want citrus, there is simply nothing better out there."
L'Artisan Parfumeur - Timbuktu (woody smoky) "An affecting start of vetiver, sandalwood, and incense that seems quiet until you realize that, like modern sound systems that can pipe music into every room, one sprtiz fills a house with an odd, distinctly perceptible, but almost infared shimmer of woody freshness."

Making waves across the pond is Prince Charles'--yes, that Prince Charles--five piece organic skin treatment set called Highgrove, named after his estate in Gloucestershire. Annoyingly ubiquitous Justin Timberlake will headline the Conde Nast benefit, Fashion Rocks, on September 5th, which is oh-so-coincidentally the start date of NY Fashion Week. Sounds like someone could use a little lesson in saturation. [Fashionista]
The tattoo-inspired inaugural fragrance launch from Ed Hardy by Christian Audigier was so successful he'll launch a follow up pair of men's and women's fragrances this December. Nothing like a new scent for the holidays to cover up the desperate smell of alcohol and bitterness. [WWD]
While at first they were glad to get some well-received coverage when Agnyess Deyn fronted for one of their songs, bandmates of Five O'clock Heroes are now getting a little tired of being overshadowed by all the attention her one tune, "Who," is getting. After the continued success of Prada's women's scent Infusion d’Iris, Spanish company Puig is releasing a men's Infusion fragrance in October. Similar to the female version, it combines Florentine iris with cedar, vetiver, olibanum and benzoin, and comes in a bottle modeled on the women’s version. Sounds like Prada is running a little dry on originality over there...[Cosmetic News]
Karl Lagerfeld does it for the girls and boys with his new fragrance,

new scents? Come November, we'll find out. [WWD]
For all you art-saavy men out there, it was just announced that Christie's will auction off a large portion of Yves Saint Laurent's art collection in February. Estimated at nearly $600 million, his well stocked collection includes pieces from Picasso, Mondrian, Matisse, Goya and, of course, Warhol. I've got my bidding paddle ready! [Fashionista]
Passing Judgment: David Beckham wore some hideous--and I mean hideous--eye wear when leaving a restaurant the other night. Usually he's so impeccably dressed. I'm calling for five more Armani Underwear ads to make up for this atrocity. I'm already in touch with his people. [The Sun]
The thought of Pierre Hardy designing shoes for The Gap sent our little heads swirling with the possibilities of the vast array of footwear he would create. L.A. boutique Kitson finally got their story straight and said they are dropping Victoria Beckham's men's denim line from dVd because of poor demand. Puma has launched a men's and women's fragrance as a follow up to their 2003 Puma Flowing duo. This season's smells have been dubbed "Free Flowing Man" and "Free Flowing Woman." Summer scents generally have a similar theme. They are clean, bright, grassy and, at times, a little soapy smelling. In other words, the "so fresh, and so clean" smell wasn't incredibly sexy but worked well to cover up any malodorous moments on a particularly hot day. That is, until Dolce & Gabbana unleashed The One for Men, a down, dirty and extremely sexy scent.
The One is a spicy, oriental fragrance with a blend of musk, woody, citrus and floral notes—shaking up notes of tobacco, grapefruit, basil, cardamom, cedar, orange blossom and coriander. It's masculine without being stuffy, sexy without being slutty and bright without being girly. The One smells like a hot, young, Italian man in a perfectly tailored and pressed suit after a day at the office on a warm spring day. He's clean, but not too clean. Just the right amount of dirty so you know he's a man and a champ in the sack.
While the one is a spicy, oriental fragrance, it's quite versatile. It's certainly a day-or-night scent for all-seasons. It's not overbearing or too warm for spring and not too light or clean for winter.
The One is definitely on top of our list.

Following up on her first homerun scent for men that is in permanent rotation in my cologne collection, Nicole Farhi's latest fragrance foray, Bleu Intense, is an ode to the fragrant Mediterranean Sea that captures the essence of spring's light, clean and floral essence. The eau de toilette mixes floral notes with warm musk and spice. It contains top notes of mandarin, green galbanum and sage, middle notes of violet, lavender, tea tree, birch leaf and willow, and base notes of wood accords, crystalline amber, vanilla and musk.
To get the bottom of this fragrance, your Stylelist went straight to the top and made Out staffers take a big whiff. Here's what they had to say about Nicole Farhi's Bleu Intense:
"It's a little too powdery, so I wouldn't wear
it. It's just not my taste. I like more spice and musk in my colognes.
I could imagine Richie Rich wearing something like this, or those guys who
wear those really deep v-neck shirts and buy women's jeans for the
fit." —Matthew Breen, Executive Editor
"I like it and I would wear it. It smells very clean and floral. I can definitely smell the lavender notes. It's a soft fragrance and perfect for the modern
day man! I would love to see a super masculine guy wear this. It would
offset that masculinity a bit. It's certainly a fragrance for someone who is very
confident."
—Seth Howard, Senior Market Editor
"It's a nice bottle. It smells feminine but clean...like a very nice
powder. I don't think I would wear it. I could imagine an old lady
wearing this, or a fussy older gentleman. Seems like something a woman
would buy for her boyfriend or husband and then wear it herself. But I
would have no problem making out with a guy wearing this."
—Joe Mejía,
Managing Editor
"I wouldn't wear it. It's too girly and too pretty for me. It has some floral and musky notes in there. But I prefer something a little more spicy and citrusy."
—Brent Coover, Editorial and Fashion Assistant
"It's smells young, fresh and very spring-like. It reminds me of my favorite babysitter, Becky. When I was with Becky, I felt alive! I just have to spray myself with this fragrance and I immediately feel more alive than I've felt since I was seven."
—Josh Tager, Senior Digital Editor
"I love it! I love fragrances that walk the line between masculine and feminine. This one draws you in with a fresh powdery smell of amber that is perfect for spring, then seduces you with some warm musky notes that come alive on the skin. I'm not butch enough to pull off some wildly masculine fragrance, so this is a perfect warm weather fragrance for me."

A changing of the seasons means it's time to shake up your fragrance. As the flowers bloom, your bold, musky winter fragrance should give way to something lighter, fresher and cleaner that captures the spirit of season.
Renowned New York City Perfumer, Bond No. 9 is known for capturing the scents of Manhattan—think flower district-inspired floral notes, sweet Magnolia cupcakes. For their latest collection, Bond No. 9 dug into the Manhattan's pop-art past and sought inspiration in Andy Warhol. In collaboration with The Warhol Foundation, Bond No. 9 debuts it's second Warhol fragrance, Union Square, in March.
Andy Warhol once said, "Another way to take up more space is with perfume. I really love wearing perfume." And the love of New York City shared by Warhol and Bond No. 9 makes the collaboration a match made in Manhattan. After all, Warhol did set up shop and found The Factory in Union Square, so it is only fitting that the fragrance pay homage to Warhol's former stomping ground.
The scent, an "ambi-sexual" floral fragrance, blends sweet and cool through blending floral notes like lily of the valley and blue freesia with animal musk and golden amber for a touch of warmth and sensuality. Suitable for a man or woman, the scent truly comes alive on the skin. The flacon is equally stunning and features Warhol's vibrant flower screen prints that will look tres chic in your dopp kit and on your counter display.

Tom Ford is orchestrating a hostile takeover of the fragrance industry, one spritz at a time.
This week, he launched his newest fragrance Tom Ford for Men—yes, the one with the controversial ads depicting the bottle wedged between a dewy woman's thighs and barely covering her Brazilian bikini wax. This is only the first of many fragrances he plans to release in the coming months—including the limited edition Tom Ford Extreme due out next month.
While the ads have caught worldwide media attention, what about the fragrance itself? Based on the ads, one might think it smells like the sweaty thighs, breasts or the naughty bits of a woman, which wouldn't be hard to believe coming from Ford who once compared one of his fragrances to the sweat on a man's balls.
This is the man who told New York Magazine, "I don’t wear deodorant. I don’t! I actually love the way that human beings
smell. And I love the way my dog’s ears smell. My smell is a little
sweat, a little dog. I think a lot of us have gotten so weird about
it, especially Americans. Americans love to, like, wash away all trace
of human smell. I like human smell. It’s what makes us attracted to
each other. I mean, I’m not attracted to some laundry that I take out
after I’ve put Febreze in it. I don’t like clean. I don’t like the
smell of soap.”
Should this man be trusted to make a sexy fragrance?

Meet Ralph Lauren's new man. He's the face (and body, swoon!) of the fifth delicious Polo fragrance that is set to launch in September, Polo Explorer. Rory will appear in print and television advertisements for the new scent that is sure to be a hit this fall.
For more information about the fragrance, check out Homme Grooming (full disclosure: that's my other blog).
Your sense of smell is a powerful force. And in the sweltering heat of summer—amid the potpurri of sweat and sunscreen—it can be a blessing and a curse. So, do your part to make the world a sweeter smelling place and douse yourself with Gucci's latest fragrance for men—Gucci Pour Homme II. Does it get any sexier than Gucci? It's not exactly the "smell of sweat on a man's balls," but you won't be disappointed.
Not only is Pour Homme II a sophisticated and sensual cologne that will make everyone want to stand a little closer to you, but its formulation walks the line between manly musk and shower fresh so it appeals to men of all ages. If you prefer a signature scent that you can wear year-round, Gucci II is light enough for summer and warm enough to last well into the colder months. Do you know someone who constantly marinates in their cologne? Luckily, it's tough to overdo this one because it quickly dissipates into a subtle scent—but that also means you might want to reapply before heading to an afterwork happy hour.
Gucci Pour Homme II features a blend of citrusy bergamot and soothing lavender on top, spicy pimento, black tea and warm cinnamon at the heart and olive wood, manly musky notes, tobacco leaves and smokey myrrh rounding out the bottom. It might sound like an oddly odiferous cocktail, but it interacts beautifully with your body's chemistry. So, don't trust the scent strip at the fragrance counter. Spray it on your skin and inhale. Summer smells better already.

Sometimes it's easy to overlook the most important part of a long profile, especially when it's approximately the 184th such piece about Tom Ford to be published in as many hours.
Buried deep within the lengthy New York magazine article -- from which certain details about Ford's relative measurements were apparently excised before going to print -- is this offhanded statement about his new store's "perfumery of Estée Lauder–produced scents." Ford has said that they
are supposed to smell like the sweat of a man's balls. A woman wants a
man to smell like a man, he thinks.
Sorry for, um, missing the ball our last time around.
